Learn more about South Dakota
The twin cities of Lead and Deadwood (in the Sturgis program) are located in the northern Black Hills just an hour from the Rapid City Airport and an hour and a half from Mount Rushmore. During the Christmas season, students may participate in the annual Community Christmas Celebration and the preparations the day before. The First Presbyterian Church has a Christmas Eve service that is a bit like an "open mike" service with any congregant performing, reading or sharing. The area has 2 modest ski resorts that have day and multiple day passes that are very nominal compared with the Colorado resorts. Lead is an old gold mine town and Deadwood is an old west town with lots of history. Wild life is abundant with coyotes, deer, and wild turkeys plus a local buffalo ranch. The First Presbyterian Church is a small congregation of 45+ people who welcome all that come through its doors. They love to laugh and readily reach out to new friends. They have a social time after each service and participants will be encouraged to share recipes.
