Big Skies. Wide-Open Country, Friendly People
Stillwater is a small community located in north central Oklahoma. The town is a one hour drive from both of Oklahoma’s largest cities, Oklahoma City and Tulsa, and only one and one half hours driving from Wichita, Kansas. Stillwater is the location of Oklahoma State University’s main campus with an enrollment of 32, 500 students from Oklahoma, several surrounding states and 116 different countries. Stillwater is the home of the OSU “Cowboys”.
This program is a pilot program. The student will be housed and fed by one family which has volunteered for the entire two week period. This family has several aquariums of fresh water tropical fish and two adopted Greyhounds. The student participating in this program should be comfortable around the fish and large dogs. One member of the family is allergic to smoke, so no smoking will be permitted in their home or car.
The focus of this program will be on home, church, and family activities giving the student a chance to experience American family life. This family enjoys walking, watching college sports, movies, visiting museums and learning about different cultures. Christmas traditions such as decorating a Christmas tree, baking cookies, Christmas programs at our church, and the giving of small gifts on Christmas Day and Christmas dinner will be observed. Day trips to sites of interest will be made. Sites of interest in Oklahoma City we may visit are the Myriad Botanical Gardens ( Adm. $6), National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum ( $9), Oklahoma History Center ( Adm $5). Sites of interest in Tulsa which we are planning to visit are Gilcrease Museum (Adm $3), Philbrock Museum of Art (Adm $8), and the Oklahoma Aquarium (Adm $14). Weather permitting, we may have the chance to work at a greyhound kennel and visit a local Miniature Horse farm. The exact schedule will depend on the student’s interests and tastes.
