The 2008 program runs from December 20, 2008 to January 2, 2009.   Some local programs have elected slightly different dates for their programs.   Each of these special dates are noted in the description of the program.   In order to apply for the 2008 program, you must:

1.      Select your placement preferences

2.      Open the application form by clicking here.

3.      Enter your information and preferences into the spaces provided.  Application forms MUST be completed online and printed (or typed).  Handwritten applications will not be accepted.

4.      Print the application by clicking on the PRINT button at the top or bottom of the application form.

5.      Take the completed application form to your advisor and obtain the necessary signatures

6.      Mail the completed application, copies of your student ID card or class schedule, proof of marriage (if applicable), together with your payment to Christmas International House as soon as possible after October 1.

The application form has a place for you to list three(3) specific programs or states.  List additional choices on the application back if desired.

We will contact you by e-mail or telephone as soon as you have been placed.  You will then receive a letter of invitation from your selected program.

Applications will be accepted between October 1 and November 22 or until all programs are filled.

If you want to apply to CIH with another international student, please clip both applications together and mail in the same envelope.   We cannot place more than four students from one university campus or country in the same program.    If you must travel as a group to share expenses, consider several programs in one geographical area (some states have several programs within driving distance of each other).   The local programs request that students from several different nationalities be placed in their programs and we seek to have an international mix in each local CIH.   This program is designed primarily for international students away from home for the first time, rather than for students who have been in the U.S. for several years.

Requirements

Hospitalization Insurance is mandatory for placement in a CIH program.    If you do not have insurance, ask your International Student Advisor to help you acquire a short-term policy.

Cost

A registration fee of $90.00 for singles ($125.00 for couples or families) is due with applications if postmarked before November 1.   After October 31, a fee of $110.00 for singles ($145.00 for couples or families) must accompany the application form.   Please make checks or money orders payable to AMIS/Christmas International House (Cash is not accepted).   This fee will be refunded only if you are not placed.    If you are placed, there is NO refund.

Placement Process

As soon as your application is processed, you will receive a letter from your host program with a confirmation card enclosed.   Mail this card to your host community IMMEDIATELY in order to hold your place in that CIH program.    This letter will give you details about the exact address of the program, its activities, and information about meeting you when you arrive.

If you plan to travel by airplane or bus, please check the cost involved BEFORE applying.   DO NOT make travel reservations until you have been placed in a program!!    If you have limited travel funds available, we recommend that you apply for a program closer to your school.    If you are traveling by car, remember snow tires are needed in many sections of the country in case of snow.    Also, airplane reservations should be made immediately upon acceptance into a program with plans to arrive at a decent hour (8:00 AM – 8:00 PM).  If friends or other students from your school are accepted into the same program,   if it is possible, please coordinate your travel arrangements to arrive at the same time. 

When you are accepted into a program, BE SURE THAT YOUR HOST KNOWS THE DATE, EXACT TIME OF YOUR ARRIVAL AT THE PROGRAM AND YOUR TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS.

Cancellations or Change of Plans

CIH has been successful in the past years because of the kindness of the American host families in the programs and the goodwill and positive response of the international students.   The Host Families/Individuals are looking forward to your visit and have made special plans for you.  Cancellations are really discouraged.  Serious problems have arisen when students failed to notify the host when a change of plans occurred.  IF YOUR PLANS DO CHANGE, PLEASE, AS A COURTESY, CALL YOUR CIH REGISTRATION OFFICE AND HOST PROGRAM IMMEDIATELY!     This is most important for your hosts are individuals who are making a special effort to make the Christmas holidays very special for you.    YOUR CIH HOST EXPECTS YOU TO ATTEND THE ENTIRE PROGRAM AND PARTICIPATE IN ALL OF THE ACTIVITIES THEY HAVE ORGANIZED FOR YOUR ENJOYMENT.    YOUR FAILURE TO ABIDE BY POLICIES AND REQUESTS OF YOUR HOST CAN RESULT IN YOUR BEING ASKED TO LEAVE THE PROGRAM AT YOUR OWN EXPENSE.
