Learn more about Minnesota
Grand Rapids is located approximately 190 miles north of Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota. Grand Rapids is situated among 1,000 lakes and lush northern Minnesota forests. Nothing can surpass this area’s natural beauty.
Winter is truly paradise in the 1,000 Grand Lake area. Our northern wilderness provides frozen lakes for ice fishing and miles of groomed trails for Nordic skiing. You can head to Mount Itasca for a full afternoon of sledding, skiing and snowboarding. If one is interested in riding snowmobiles, that’s possible as well. You can build snow men or snow castles outdoors. We’ll provide an old fashioned horse drawn sleigh ride and evening bonfire and sledding under the northern stars.
The Grand Rapids area offers more than 200K of skiing on 19 groomed trails. Enjoy a variety of terrain for the beginner, intermediate and expert, both classic and freestyle techniques. There are local businesses who rent skis if you don’t own your own equipment.
During your stay, we’ll host an International Pot-luck Supper. This involves an evening of sharing with other International Students over a meal of international dishes. Please feel free to bring photo’s of home and plan on sharing your favorite dish and customs with new found friends.
You will be able to experience a Christmas Eve service in a local church with your host family if you choose to. You are welcome to attend and experience the host family Christmas traditions with them.
Temperatures in northern Minnesota can drop as low as -10 below zero or as high as 35 degrees above zero. Members of the Community Presbyterian Church will attempt to outfit you if you are unable to find the proper clothing. You’ll need to bring warm coats, hats, scarves, gloves and boots if you own them. The snow can be deep this time of year.
